The thing is that plenty of people make money doing Social Media for others whether it’s through their job or as a contractor… that means in order for us to make money, all we need to do is find the resources of those who are already running businesses that have low-maintenance and high-return and use that information to set up our own business with the exact same principle. Easy right?
Where do you start though? And when you do start up your business, how can you be sure you won’t be the one slaving away doing cold calls and emailing every potential prospect left, right and center, using trial-and-error to hope one day you could make it big?
Well, I got thinking about how I started – everything I seemed to be doing in the first month of starting my business, I was doing as pure trial and error, and I was so sick of having to do the same things over and over again, I decided it was time to document my ‘struggles’. So I made process documents for every aspect of my business so no matter what happened to me, the business could keep running and if it came time to sell, anyone could just walk in and the business would keep doing what it was supposed to.
I remember my desperate need for a mentor, but most I had either thought Social Media was a passing phase, or had no experience in the services industry…until one day I worked up the courage to talk to my own mother. That’s right, my own mother who had been running a successful marketing agency was the last person I thought I’d ever need to seek help from. And all it took was a handful of her templates of what she was proposing to clients in her own field, and all of a sudden, my more professional-looking documents were actually starting to attract a healthy client base.
As soon as I saw the difference that some templates of ‘real’ documents had made for my business, I realized that sometimes it’s not about the advice we get – it’s about what we can do when we put a twist on resources others are using successfully.
And when I had my full system in place of how I was running my business, templates included, I was able to finally look at booking my own holidays, be sick whenever I wanted, and not worry about what would happen to my business without me.
Because I know I would have jumped at the opportunity if a system like this existed when I first started, no matter the price because even at the very start, I knew everything successful has its own system and process. Just look at McDonald’s – it’s no mistake that they are so successful – their systems work, and they are always consistent no matter what country you visit their restaurant in.
Honestly, I was conflicted about whether this information was even needed…so many people say they want to run a business, but so few actually go through with it. Plus, I didn’t want to give away my life’s work…these systems are my ‘McDonald’s’…
